Volunteer

Bread & Broth’s volunteers are the ‘heart’ of our food outreach organization and are a gift to our program and our community.   Making a commitment to make a difference in the lives of others is what propels our hard working and dedicated volunteers.

Volunteering can be an exciting, growing and enjoyable experience and Bread & Broth has many volunteer opportunities.   For most of our volunteer positions, a commitment of only 3-4 hours a month is needed.  However, some volunteer positions may require 12-15 hours a month.  It is up to you to choose your commitment to Bread & Broth. Also, Bread & Broth has positions for substitutes for each of our areas of volunteering; so you can signup to be on a substitute list.

Weekly Team Assignment

Food Donation Pickup: Monday morning and/or Friday morning (9 a.m. – 12 p.m.) Minimum Age: 18. Pickup food at local stores and farmer’s markets (in season) and deliver to Grace Hall.

Once a month Team Assignments:

B&B volunteers are assigned to Teams which serve once a month based on the week of the month (i.e., Team # 1 serves during the first week of the month, Team # 2 serves the second week of the month, etc.)

  • Cook: Assist Lead Cook with full course meal preparation: Monday morning/afternoon (times vary by week)

  • Dinner Setup/Serving/Take Down Crew:  Monday afternoon/early evening (3:00p.m. – 6:00p.m.)

  • Clean-Up Crew:  Monday evening (5:20p.m. – 7:00p.m.)

Second Serving Meal:- St. Theresa Grace Hall, 1041 Lyons Ave.

  • Cook: Re-heat prepared soup and prepare a simple entrée: Friday afternoon (times vary by week and menu)

  • Dinner Setup/Serving/Cleanup: Friday afternoon/early evening (3:00p.m. – 6:00p.m.)
    … Minimum Age: 16

    • School Year Food Packing: Pack weekend food bags for distribution to students. Thursday afternoon (3:00p.m.– p.m.4:30p.m.)
      … Minimum Age: 10
    • School Year Food Packing: Pack weekend food bags on Thursday (between 3:45 p.m.– p.m.4:30p.m.) Deliver bags to schools Friday morning (times vary).
      … Minimum Age: 18

Quarterly Team Assignment

Deep Cleaning: -St. Theresa Grace Hall, 1041 Lyons Ave.

Quarterly (January, April, July, October) Wednesday morning kitchen deep cleaning (between 9:00a.m.– 11:00p.m.) or Noon)

Summer B&B 4 Kids Program

Bread & Broth 4 Kids:– St. Theresa Grace Hall, 1041 Lyons Ave.

For 9-10 weeks during the summer school break, kid friendly food is provided to children up to the age of 18 on Wednesdays.
(June 10th through August 5th).

Individuals can sign up to volunteer any Wednesday if the volunteer roster has openings. This is the only Bread & Broth program where volunteers sign up on a weekly basis.

  • Pack food bags for distribution to local Child Care Center on Wednesdays (10:00a.m. – 11:30p.m.)

  • Handout food to children/families from St. Theresa Grace Hall Foyer on Wednesdays (11:00a.m. – 12:30p.m.)
    … Minimum Age: 16

Leadership/Advisory Board Positions 

Monday Meal: – St. Theresa Grace Hall, 1041 Lyons Ave.

  • Lead Cook Lead the cook crew in regards to menu, safety procedures, interface with Food Coordinator Chairperson. (times vary – normally 4-6 hours – one week per month)
  • Dinner Setup/Serving/Cleanup Team’s Volunteer Coordinator and Assistant Coordinator – Responsible for directing volunteers during the Monday Meals setup, serving and cleanup (2:30p.m. – 7:00p.m. – one week per month)

Second Serving Meal:– St. Theresa Grace Hall, 1041 Lyons Ave.

  • Dinner Setup/Serving/Cleanup Team’s Coordinator and Assistant CoordinatorResponsible for directing volunteers during the Second Serving meals’ setup, serving and cleanup (3:00p.m. – 6:30p.m. – one week per month)

Bread & Broth 4 Kids:- St. Theresa Grace Hall, 1041 Lyons Ave.

  • Team Lead – Responsible for setting up food for packing and directing the B&B 4 Kids volunteers during packing and delivery (2:30p.m. – 4:30p.m. – one week per month)

Current Open Leadership Position(s): Include…..
  • Deep Cleaning Coordinator: Assist in arranging the quarterly Deep Cleaning events, help procure cleaning supplies and help direct Deep Cleaning crew members. In this position you will assist the Deep Cleaning Chairperson.
  • Meal Volunteer & Service Coordinators and Assistant Coordinators: Responsible for the efficient and effective operation of their assigned meal service team (Once monthly – either Monday Meal or Second Serving on Fridays).  Duties include directing the volunteers in all aspects of meal service, including setup, packing and distributing giveaway food bags, meal serving, managing supplies, kitchen cleaning, and breakdown. Assistant Coordinator will support the efforts of the Lead Volunteer & Service Coordinator
