Adopt a Day of Nourishment Articles

Bread & Broth Meal sponsored by Kirkwood Mountain Resort

Everyone in the Lake Tahoe South Shore community is invited to attend any of the weekly meals served by St. Theresa’s Bread & Broth organization in St. Theresa’s Grace Hall.  The Monday Meal is a full-course, hot, nutritious dinner served from 4 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. and Friday’s Second Serving meal offers a simple entrée and soup served from 4 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.   In addition to providing delicious meals, dinner guests are provided the opportunity to take home a food “giveaway” bag containing a variety of foods including fresh fruits and vegetables, dairy products, canned goods, and breads and pastries.

These meals and food giveaways are made possible by a variety of funding sources and food donors including local stores and businesses, farmer’s markets, private donors, and grants.  However, the primary funding source for the Monday Meal is B&B’s Adopt a Day of Nourishment program.  Adopt A Day sponsors donate $300 to host a meal and send a sponsor crew to help serve at their sponsorship dinner.

Kirkwood Mountain Resort was the Adopt A Day sponsor for the July 15th Monday Meal and Kirkwood team members Joan Gibson, Patricia Maas and Armando Shalhoub volunteered their time to help at Kirkwood’s sponsorship dinner.  “Having just moved to the Tahoe area, I was so excited to have the opportunity to give to our local community,” shared Patricia.  “What a wonderful way to serve others and do good!  All the guests and volunteers were so thankful and hospitable. This evening truly warmed my heart.”

B&B is so grateful to the wonderful Kirkwood team members who come prepared to help at the meals wherever needed and share their warmth and kindness with the evening’s dinner guests.  B&B’s partnership with Vail’s Kirkwood and Heavenly Mountain Resort reflects the commitment that the Vail Resort organization has to our local community.

Tahoe Douglas Rotary Serves the Community

The Tahoe Douglas Rotary Club is truly committed to helping non-profit organizations in the Lake Tahoe South Shore community.  From helping to fund activities for develop- mentally disabled children, to building ice rinks for the local curling teams, to feeding those in need in the community, Rotary provides funds for causes that improve the lives of our local community members.

Bread & Broth has been a very thankful recipient of the Tahoe Douglas Rotary Club’s generosity.  For the past two years, the local Rotarians have sponsored 11 Adopt A Day of Nourishments; feeding full course, nutritious dinners to over 900 dinner guests.  The most recent Monday Meal the Rotary sponsored was on June 17th and Rotarians Ashley Colvin, Ellen Dauscher, Hannah Davis, J.J. McLaughlin and Brian Williams were on hand to help the B&B volunteers.

“Tahoe Douglas Rotary is happy to be a part of the Bread & Broth Adopt A Day program,” shared Ellen Dauscher.  “The service provided is so valuable to the community.  Thanks for letting us participate.”    B&B truly enjoys having the Rotarians join us.  They show up with a great attitude, work hard, and demonstrate kindness and warmth to everyone they encounter.  B&B appreciates and looks forward to partnering with the Rotary as they sponsor two more ADDs this year.

EpicPromise Grant funds B&B Adopt A Day

Vail Resort’s EpicPromise grants are distributed to over 50 non-profits in the Lake Tahoe South Shore community.  These grant funds are used by the recipient organizations to support a variety of non-profit programs which benefit children, mental illness programs, environmental projects, to name just a few.  Bread & Broth is also an EpicPromise Grant recipient and a portion of the funds go to sponsoring 12 Adopt A Day of Nourishment Monday Meal dinners annually.

On June 10th, an Adopt A Day sponsor crew from Heavenly Mountain Resort consisting of Michelle Beall, Chris Brune, Katie Ficeto, Duncan Kincheloe, and Zach Koneffko joined the B&B volunteers to serve the evening’s meal.  “The opportunity to participate in this ministry and chance to serve the community is our entire team looks forward to,’ commented Chris.  “We’re always happy to be here and look forward to the next time we’re invited back.”

The AAD sponsor crews from Heavenly and Kirkwood Mountain Resorts are always a pleasure to have helping at B&B’s dinners.  Many of the Vail team members have served many times over the years and are very helpful and need little direction.  Without exception, the Vail teams are warm, friendly and welcoming to all of the dinner guests who enjoy the hot and nutritious meals funded by the Vail EpicPromise grant monies.

Heavenly Hosts B&B Monday Meal

Dedicated to improving the quality of life in the Lake Tahoe South Shore community, Bread & Broth provides two meals every week to anyone who wants to enjoy a hot, nutritious dinner.  Currently, due to the fire at the Lake Tahoe Community Presbyterian Church, both dinners are served at St. Theresa Church Grace Hall.   B&B’s Monday Meal serves a hot, full-course dinner and the Friday Second Serving provides soup and a simple entree.  Attending any of B&B’s dinners is a great way to enjoy a great meal!

Helping Bread & Broth to finance and serve the Monday Meal dinner are the generous Adopt A Day of Nourishment sponsors and the sponsor crew members that volunteer to spend 3 hours of their time to assist the B&B volunteers.   The hosting organization for the Monday, May 20th evening meal for the 3rd time this year, was Heavenly Mountain Resort, who sent six members of their Human Resources team to help at the dinner.

“The ability to connect and provide something meaningful to another person in our community is truly rewarding,” shared Eric Davidson.  “The people we served at Bread & Broth were so grateful, their bellies were filled and our souls were warmed.”   Serving alongside of Eric were fellow HR team members Jesse Harrison, Will Battenberg, Emily Fukiage, Shylo Ewing, and Rebecca Del Pozo.  These sponsor crew members were a joy to have helping at the dinner.  All smiles and kinds words to our dinner guests.

B&B is very grateful to Heavenly Mountain Resorts for their support of our program and their commitment to helping the community members of South Lake Tahoe.

Club Live Serves Community

Thanks to the leadership of Club Live’s advisor, Larry Lambdin, South Tahoe Middle School students have the opportunity to experience leadership events, participate in community service projects and enjoy recreational trips all focused on providing safe and high energy alternative activities.

As one community service project for the club members, Club Live for the last 4 years has sponsored a Bread & Broth Adopt A Day of Nourishment.  This year, the club hosted the May 13th Monday Meal, and in addition to helping the B&B volunteers at the dinner, they thoughtfully put together packets containing personal hygiene items to hand out to the dinner guests.

It is always a treat to have the Club Live student members helping at the dinners.  They are cheerful, filled with energy and always ready to help when needed.  This year, the Club Live members included Alisha Bailey, Bianca Blue, and Rudy and Jose Regalado under the guidance of Larry Lamdbin.  When asked about their serving at the Monday Meal, Ruby responded, “Thank you for having us.  We had such a wonderful day with everyone.  This was such a fun experience!”

Kudos to these young Club Live students and to their efforts to help others and participate in activities that expand their experiences and opportunities.

Harrah’s/Harveys’ HEROs Help Others

Twice yearly, the Harrah’s/Harveys’ HEROs organization sponsors a Bread & Broth Adopt A Day of Nourishment meal to help others in the Lake Tahoe South Shore Community.  On April 22nd, the HEROs were back hosting an AAD at St. Theresa Grace Hall sponsoring the evening meal.  “We all enjoyed serving our local community especially at Easter time,” said HERO member Janice Blanchard.  “It was a fantastic experience to celebrate and serve on Earth Day!”

By sponsoring a Bread & Broth AAD, individuals, organizations and businesses partner with B&B to help cover the costs of a Monday Meal dinner and participate in many of the activities involved in providing a meal serving anywhere from 60 to 110 dinner guests.

The HEROs crew came all decked out in their colorful HEROs’ shirts to help the B&B volunteers and warmly welcome and serve the 83 dinner guests who came to enjoy the chicken stroganoff dinner.   In addition to Janice, the HEROs sponsor crew consisted of

Tim Ault, Pat Frega, Krysteena Palaroan, and Willie Way.  B&B loves having the HEROs join us because they are so experienced, helpful and great to the dinner clients.  We always look forward to their next AAD sponsorship.

Heavenly Hosts B&B Dinner

The team members from Heavenly Mountain Operations Snow Surfaces work really hard to make skiing at the resort a truly enjoyable experience.  On February 12th,  the Adopt A Day sponsor crew from the Snow Surfaces Operations brought the same dedication to helping the Bread & Broth volunteers provide a tasty meal and fun evening to the grateful dinner guests.

“As part of the Heavenly EpicPromise program, it is an honor to work with Bread & Broth to support and feed the less fortunate members of our community,” said Tyler Lehman, Heavenly Mountain Operations Snow Surfaces Grooming Manager.  “These programs are such a vital part of the community.”

Joining Tyler were David Hager, Snow Making Manager; Bryan Hickman, Sr. Manager of Snow Surfaces, and Frank Papandrea, Sustainability Manager.  These four Heavenly team members are “seasoned’ volunteers who have helped at previous Heavenly sponsorship dinners and they were a delight to having helping with the dinner’s setup, serving, and cleanup.

B&B would like to thank Heavenly for their $300 sponsorship donation and for encouraging the incredible team members from Heavenly to come to help others in need of assistance and who always giving freely of their time and effort to make a difference in our community.

Ameriprise Partners with B&B

Ameriprise Financial Services, Inc. has a legacy of giving back to the community and annually sponsors a corporate-wide National Day of Service in November with the goal of ending hunger.  This year, the South Lake Tahoe Ameriprise Financial Services’ office once again chose to join with Bread and Broth in their efforts to feed the hungry by sponsoring an “Adopt a Day of Nourishment” on November 13th.   This is their fifth November Adopt A Day in the last five years.

“A wonderful way to support the spirit of Thanksgiving,” said Office Manager and Ameriprise Financial Private Wealth Advisor, Richard Gross.  “We are humbled and honored to participate every November and appreciated the opportunity to be of service.”  Also, joining Richard were Elizabeth Palmer, Client Services Manager and Melissa Stefani.   The Ameriprise crew had a busy evening helping the B&B volunteers bagging the “giveaway’ food items, serving heaping trays filled with pork roast, sauerkraut, and mashed potatoes and assisting with the dinner’s clean up.

B&B would like to thank Ameriprise Financial Services, Inc. and the local Ameriprise office members for their generous monetary and time contribution to seeing that over 90 meals were served to the less fortunate members of the south shore community.

Still Water Yoga Serves Community

A gold star for outstanding volunteer service and original Adopt A Day of Nourishment
picture pose goes to Still Water Yoga. This limber and very kind and thoughtful group
of ladies was a joy to have hosting Bread & Broth’s July 24 th Monday Meal. To Karen
Eberlin, Shannon Liebel, Lucy McLaughlin, Susan Glasson and Liz Norman, B&B would
like to thank you and would love to have your yoga group back any time.
The $250 donated for the sponsorship meal enabled the B&B cooks to offer pulled pork
and roast beef sandwiches, broccoli, cole slaw, and fruit salad on the evening’s menu.
In addition to serving the meals to the dinner guests, the Still Water Yoga crew helped
bag fruits, vegetables, dairy products and baked goods to send home with the diners to
help supplement meals later in the week. At the end of meal, this hardworking crew
helped the B&B volunteers with the meal’s breakdown and cleanup.
“It was a pleasure to be able to help serve the community,” said Shannon. “Thank you
for being so organized and allowing us this opportunity.” B&B is so pleased to have
the support and help of our community partners like Still Water Yoga who take this
