Heavenly Mtn. Safety Team Hosts Dinner

Bread & Broth takes tremendous pride in providing a fantastic communal dinner every Monday that everyone in the community is invited to attend.  Sharing a full-course, nutritious dinner with other members of our community is a wonderful way to engage in fellowship and share a delicious dinner with others.  B&B has been providing meals to the community for almost 30 years and for the past eight years, the Adopt A Day of Nourishment program has provided any member of the community the opportunity to host and serve at their sponsorship dinner.

On Monday, March 18th, the Heavenly Mountain Safety Team sponsored their first ever Adopt A Day.  “The Heavenly Mountain Safety Team appreciates the opportunity to serve our community,” said Steve Martensen, a Safety Team member.  “We met many amazing and grateful people, and we were very happy to serve food and smiles!  Thank you to the wonderful folks at B&B for making this all happen.”   Joining Steve were fellow Safety Team members Myles Chouinard, Jim Fitzpatrick, Brian Heuser, and Uno Stolt.  The Safety Team really enjoyed serving a very tasty roasted turkey dinner served with mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberry sauce and green salad – Thanksgiving in March!

The meal, and its associated costs, was funded by the generous $300 donation provided by the Heavenly Mtn. Safety Team.   The five sponsor team members graciously and happily helped with packing food ‘giveaway’ bags, dished out food on the serving line and helped with the meal’s cleanup.  Thank you to the Heavenly Mtn. Safety Team members for their support of the Adopt A Day program and to the great sponsor crew members who volunteered at their sponsor meal.  They did a wonderful job of making dinner guests feel cared for, happy and well fed.

Heavenly Ski Patrol Hosts B&B Dinner

Taking a break from helping skiers and keeping them safe on Heavenly Mountain Resort’s slopes, Heavenly Ski Patrol members exchanged their skis for Bread & Broth aprons to help feed Monday Meal dinner guests on March 4th.   As a follow up to an Adopt A Day of Nourishment on February 4th, Heavenly Ski Patrol sponsored their second AAD for the year and sent another great crew to serve at the B&B dinner.

Joining the B&B volunteers were Ski Patrol members Brandon Commanda, Lucas Johnstone, Michelle Loubet, Jacob Madecky and Marissa Streck.   “We are grateful for this opportunity to give back to the community that we live and work in,” said Michelle.

Helping to provide for those in need in the community, Michelle and her follow Ski Patrol members helped fill food giveaway bags and served up a hot nutritious beef stroganoff with noodles meal; closing their volunteer shift helping with the meal’s cleanup.

“It is always so much fun to volunteer at a Bread & Broth dinner and the work they do is so meaningful,” added Michelle.   Having a hot, nutritious meal and a place to share a communal meal does mean a great deal to those who attend B&B dinners.  Thanks to the Heavenly Ski Patrol for their $300 AAD donation and sending a great crew to help feed folks in our community.

Heavenly’s IT Team Helps B&B

Thanks to Vail’s EpicPromise grant program, Heavenly Mountain Resort and Kirkwood Mountain Resort alternate months sending Adopt A Day sponsor crew teams to host and volunteer at Bread & Broth Monday Meal dinners.  On February 24th, it was members from Heavenly’s IT team who donned B&B aprons and graciously served the evening’s dinner guests.

Normally, the Monday Meal dinners are held at St. Theresa’s Grace Hall.  However, due to renovation in Grace Hall’s kitchen, the meal was moved to St. Theresa Globin Hall and the evening’s dinner guests were treated to a Kentucky Fried Chicken dinner of chicken, mash potatoes, gravy, coleslaw and biscuits.  Helping the B&B volunteers serve the chicken dinner were IT team members Bill Cunningham, Kory Martin and Sakuna Rosas.

“We had a great time serving the community,” wrote the IT Heavenly Team.  “Great B&B volunteer team to work with and it was a vey rewarding experience!  Love to volunteer again and thanks for having us.”   B&B really enjoyed having this great crew working along side of them and we’re so happy that they found helping to feed others to be fulfilling experience.   Thank you to Vail and their EpicPromise program which supports not only Bread & Broth but many other non-profit organizations in our community.

Rotary Club Serves Community

“Helping out at Bread & Broth is a great experience,” exclaimed Rotarian Brian Williams.   Brian shared his feelings while volunteering at the Monday Meal sponsored by the Tahoe Douglas Rotary Club on February 11th.  “We are all human beings that are subject to life’s twists and turns.  Offering a hot meal and a smile to people in our community who are having a rough time is our obligation.”

Sharing a meal with others in need of a hot dinner, and a warm and safe environment, is a heartwarming way to experience fulfillment through service.  As a service organization, the Tahoe Douglas Rotary Club members have been partnering the with B&B to serve others for several years.   Approximately every 2 months, the Rotary Club sponsors an Adopt A Day of Nourishment and members from the Club donate their time to assist B&B volunteers in providing a nutritious meal to those in need.

The Rotarians who come to volunteer at B&B’s dinner are always happy and helpful and ready to assist the B&B volunteers with any chore from packing food ‘giveaway’ bags to manning the serving lines to stacking tables and chairs.  On February 11th, B&B was fortunate to have Rotarians Kristi Kandel, Pamela and Bill Kelly, John McLaughlin, along with Brian Williams, join us at the dinner.   Thanks for the great job and for being a part of an organization that serves others.

B&B Thanks Heavenly Ski Patrol

With a big winter snow storm hitting the Tahoe area on Monday, February 2nd, there was no better crew to have sponsor the Adopt A Day of Nourishment meal than Heavenly’s Ski Patrol members.  This crew braved the snowy roads and whiteout conditions to come to St. Theresa Church Grace Hall and help provide a hot and filling beef stroganoff dinner to the hungry folks who faced difficult conditions to attend B&B’s Monday Meal.

Kudos to both the Heavenly Ski Patrol sponsor crew members and the B&B volunteers who put the feeding of the hungry in our community above their concerns of traveling in the snowy conditions.  The attending dinner guest numbers were low but the positive spirit of sharing a nutritious communal meal was still very evident.

“As a group, Heavenly Ski Patrol is dedicated to being involved in the South Lake Tahoe community in as many ways as possible,” said Andrew Pierce.  “B&B provides an excellent opportunity to give back to the community that supports us.   Despite several feet of snow and challenging road conditions, our five patrollers who volunteered had an amazing time interacting with and serving, the people who were able to brave the storm.  We truly look forward to helping with B&B events in the future.”

In addition to thanking the Heavenly Ski Patrol organization for sponsoring an AAD, B&B would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the Ski Patrol’s sponsor crew members Adrianne Chio, Nick Kushner, Steven Larson, Nate Stuhlbarg and Andrew Pierce.  Not only did this wonderful group help with the dinner’s setup, serving, and cleanup but they went the extra mile of removing the mounds of snow off of the vehicles of the B&B cooks!

St. Theresa Filipino Community Hosts B&B Dinner

On Monday, January 28th, Bread & Broth’s 102 dinner guests were treated to a very special dinner.  Members of St. Theresa’s Filipino community cooked and served chicken adobo, sweet and sour pork ribs, shrimp and chicken pasta, honey mustard chicken, steamed vegetables, rice and salad.  All delicious Filipino specialty dishes.  In addition, to the heaping first servings dished out, many of the diners came back for seconds and containers filled with ‘left overs’ to take home.

Kudos to Julie Fajayan, Nora Cabanero, Bernardo Estepa, Minda Estepa, Donna Rojas, Belma Penollar, Ador Manalili, Mila Penollar, Myra Fajilan, Cecilia Deleon and Mila Seal for their kindness and concern for others.   This caring and dedicated AAD sponsor group came in on Sunday to prep all of the ingredients and spent the day on Monday cooking, setting up Grace Hall, serving dinner, and finishing off their sponsorship meal helping with the dinner’s cleanup.

Speaking on behalf of the Filipino Adopt A Day of Nourishment sponsor crew, Cecilia Estepa Deleon wrote, “Thank you for the opportunity to give us the chance to sponsor a dinner for Bread & Broth.”  Further adding, “Gracious God, everything comes from you and always give us the grace to share our blessings with our less fortunate brothers and sisters.  Show us how to honor and glorify you for the good of ourselves and others.”

B&B is so pleased to share this opportunity to feed others through our Adopt A Day of Nourishment sponsorships.  We are very thankful for our many sponsors, and particularly, the members from St. Theresa’s Filipino community who wore their hearts on their sleeves by proving the delicious Filipino themed dinner to community members.

Kirkwood Helps Serve B&B Dinner

Bread & Broth serves two meals weekly, and due to the recent fire at the Lake Tahoe Community Presbyterian Church, both meals are currently being served at St. Theresa Church Grace Hall.  The meals are hot and nutritious and everyone in the community is invited and encouraged to join us for a communal dining experience.

B&B’s full-course Monday Meal served from 4:00 to 5:30 is funded through the Adopt A Day of Nourishment program.  Through the program, AAD sponsors donate $300 to help cover the meal’s costs and send a sponsor crew to participate in the meal’s setup, serving and cleanup.  Sponsors see first-hand the impact of their funding and service.

Thanks to the Vail EpicPromise Grant program, Kirkwood Mountain resort sponsors six AADs annually and B&B’s most recent Monday Meal served on January 21st, was hosted by Kirkwood.  Without exception, the Kirkwood sponsor crew teams are outstanding.

They are fun, kind and hard working.   Doing a wonderful job representing Kirkwood at the Monday Meal were Evan Brienza, Sonya and Kate Meyer.

“We were all very honored to be invited to this dining event,” said Evan.  “It is important that we all express our human compassion and kindness.  Everyone is very friendly, both volunteers and guests.  I would be more than happy to return.”

The Second Serving meal occurs every Friday from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. and offers a soup and simple entrée.  Everyone is welcome to join our weekly dinners.

Camp Richardson Resort Sponsors Dinner

“The opportunity to give back to the community is a gift,” shared Mary Griffin as she volunteered at Bread & Broth’s Monday Meal on December 17th.   Mary along with Lori Hargan, Sierra Williams, and Kelley and Larry Pedigo were all sponsor crew members for Camp Richardson Resort’s Adopt A Day of Nourishment sponsorship and the evening meal they hosted.  “Thank you for giving the staff of Camp Richardson that gift,” Mary added.

Camp Richardson has been hosting Adopt A Days for the past 6 years and always send a dedicated and hardworking crew to help the B&B volunteers throughout the dinner event.  With their help, 96 dinner guests enjoyed a hot, full course, nutritious meal and had the opportunity to take home additional food provided in the ‘giveaway’ bags and cartons filled with the dinner’s leftovers.  Thanks to the generosity of Camp Richardson Resort’s $300 donation and their wonderful crew, B&B was able to provide another wonderful meal to those in need.

B&B’s Adopt A Day of Nourishment program is a way for anyone to participate in helping to ease hunger for the folks often struggling to meet daily basic needs.  Our sponsors are able to experience the impact of their compassion when they see that their caring puts a smile on people’s faces because they know there is someone who cares.  B&B truly appreciates Camp Richardson and their staff members for their ongoing support of the Adopt a Day program and their efforts to see that everyone has a chance to experience the beauty of our South Lake Tahoe community.

B&B Thanks Heavenly Mountain Resort

Thanks to Vail’s EpicPromise Grant funding, Heavenly Mountain Resort hosts six Bread & Broth Adopt A Day of Nourishments annually.  Heavenly’s sixth and final AAD for 2018 was sponsored on December 10th and their $300 sponsorship donation went towards serving a fantastic Greek themed dinner.   B&B’s talented volunteer cooks whipped up Greek chicken, a Greek pasta salad, broccoli, and a beautiful Greek salad to be served by the Heavenly sponsor volunteers to the very happy dinner guests.

Heavenly’s sponsor crew volunteers for the evening were Pete Kinkead, Scotty Auld, Chanel Walker, Matt Collins, and Katie Ficeto and all of them serve as members of Heavenly’s Vail EpicPromise Employee Foundation board.  Their board role is to help distribute Vail EpicPromise Employee Grant funds to Heavenly employees experiencing emergency situations. Therefore, in addition to helping Vail employees, this group of conscientious volunteers also donated their time and effort to helping feed local community members.

“This experience was amazing and made my year,” commented Pete.  “Anytime you can get 100 warm smiles and heart felt ‘thank yous’, you know that there is no better place to be.  And you leave with a renewed gratitude and appreciation for what’s really important.”

Bread & Broth would like to express our deepest appreciation for the impact of Heavenly’s funding and the help of their crew members in our efforts to ease hunger in our community.
