SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Bread & Broth, a charitable ministry of St. Theresa Church, has provided free meals since its inception in 1989. The program began in response to the number of community members struggling with hunger. Thirty-seven years later, the need to feed vulnerable residents has not diminished. In fact, economic conditions have increased the number of people who need supplemental food. According to Feeding America, over 15 percent of adults are food-insecure, and more than 1 in 5 children lack sufficient nutritious food.
To support Bread & Broth’s continuing efforts to ease hunger in the community, Vail Resorts’ EpicPromise grants have funded twelve Adopt A Day of Nourishment (AAD) sponsorships annually since 2011. On July 27, Kirkwood Mountain Resort served as Vail’s host for the Monday Meal.
“We are always thrilled to help out here,” exclaimed Adam Donaldson, a PC technician for Kirkwood. “It’s an incredible event to have a small part in. Besides the obvious joy of serving people food, my favorite part is witnessing the hard work of those volunteers who spend countless hours week after week. They are an inspiration.”
Joining Adam at the AAD sponsorship meal were fellow Kirkwood teammates Cara Bourne, Skier Services Manager; Justin Hartwell, Senior Manager of Skier Services; and Morgan Linn, IT Supervisor. These cheerful and helpful volunteers stayed busy assisting with meal setup, staffing the serving line, and helping with breakdown and cleanup.
As always, the best part of serving on the AAD hosting team is working on the serving line and interacting with the dinner guests. Along with serving a hot, healthy meal of BBQ chicken legs and sweet potatoes, the smiles and welcoming small talk make the experience meaningful for both volunteers and dinner guests.
