Bread & Broth’s volunteers are the ‘heart’ of our food outreach organization and are a gift to our program and our community. Making a commitment to make a difference in the lives of others is what propels our hard working and dedicated volunteers.

Volunteering can be an exciting, growing and enjoyable experience and Bread & Broth has many volunteer opportunities. For most of our volunteer positions, a commitment of only 3-4 hours a month is needed. However, some volunteer positions may require 12-15 hours a month. It is up to you to choose your commitment to Bread & Broth. Also, Bread & Broth has positions for substitutes for each of our areas of volunteering; so you can sign up as a team volunteer to be on a substitute list.

Weekly Team Assignment:green-goal

Food Donation Pickup:

Monday morning and/or Friday morning (9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.) Minimum Age: 18.
Pickup food at local stores and farmer’s markets (in season) and deliver to  St Theresa’s Grace Hall.

Once a month Team Assignments:

B&B Volunteers are assigned to Teams which serve once a month based on the week of the month (i.e., Team #1 serves during the first week of the month, Team #2 serves the second week of the month, etc.)

Monday Meal: – St. Theresa Grace Hall, 1041 Lyons Ave, South Lake Tahoe.

  • Cook: Assist Lead Cook with full course meal preparation: Monday  late morning/afternoon (times vary by week)… Minimum Age: 18
  • Dinner Setup/Serving/Take Down Crew:  Monday afternoon/early evening (3:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.)… Minimum Age:16
  • Clean-Up Crew:  Monday evening (5:25 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.)… Minimum Age: 14

Second Serving Meal:- Lake Tahoe Community Presbyterian Church, 2733 Lake Tahoe Blvd, South Lake Tahoe.

  • Cook: Re-heat prepared soup and prepare a simple entrée: Friday afternoon (times vary by week and menu)… Minimum Age: 18
  • Dinner Setup/Serving/Cleanup: Friday afternoon/early evening (3:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.)… Minimum Age: 16
  • Soup Coordinator: Contact Restaurant donors on a weekly basis and arrange for soup pickup (hours vary week to week)…Minimum age: 16

Bread & Broth 4 Kids:– St. Theresa Grace Hall, 1041 Lyons Ave,South Lake Tahoe.

  • School Year Food Packing: Pack weekend food bags for distribution to students. Thursday afternoon (2:00 p.m.–  3:30 p.m.)… Minimum Age: 10
  • School Year Bag Delivery: Pickup kid’s weekend food bags on Thursday (between 3:00 p.m.– 3:30 p.m.)  and deliver bags to schools before 4:00 p.m. on Thursday… Minimum Age: 18

Quarterly Team Assignments:

Deep Cleaning:St. Theresa Grace Hall, 1041 Lyons Ave, South Lake Tahoe.

  • Quarterly (January, April, July, October) day varies for morning deep cleaning (9:00 a.m.– 11:30 p.m./Noon)… Minimum Age: 18

Summer B&B 4 Kids Program:

Bread & Broth 4 Kids:– St. Theresa Grace Hall, 1041 Lyons Ave, South Lake Tahoe.

For 9-10 weeks during the  school summer break, kid friendly food is provided to children up to the age of 18 on Wednesdays (begins one week after schools close in June though one week prior to the start of the school year in August.)

Individuals can sign up to volunteer any Wednesday if the volunteer roster has openings. This is the only Bread & Broth program where volunteers sign up on a weekly basis.

  • Pack food bags for distribution to local Child Care Center on Wednesdays (9:00 a.m. – 11:30 p.m.)… Minimum Age: 10
  • Handout food to children/families from St. Theresa Grace Hall Foyer on Wednesdays (10:30  a.m. – 1:00p.m.)… Minimum Age: 16

Leadership Positions:

Monday Meal:- St. Theresa Grace Hall, 1041 Lyons Ave, South Lake Tahoe.

  • Lead Cook Lead the cook crew in regards to menu and safety procedures. Interface with Food Coordinator Chairperson. (times vary – normally 4-5 hours – one week per month)
  • Dinner Setup/Serving/Cleanup Team’s Volunteer Coordinator and Assistant Coordinator – Responsible for directing volunteers during the Monday Meals setup, serving and cleanup (2:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. – one week per month)

Second Serving Meal:– St. Theresa Grace Hall, 1041 Lyons Ave, South Lake Tahoe.

  • Dinner Setup/Serving/Cleanup Team’s Coordinator and Assistant CoordinatorResponsible for directing volunteers during the Second Serving meals’ setup, serving and cleanup (3:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. – one week per month)

Bread & Broth 4 Kids:- St. Theresa Grace Hall, 1041 Lyons Ave, South Lake Tahoe.

  • Team Lead – Responsible for setting up food for packing and directing the B&B 4 Kids volunteers during packing and delivery (1:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. – one week per month)

Current Volunteer Opportunities

Advisory Board Leadership Positions:

  • Treasurer – The Treasurer will be responsible for generating and presenting a quarterly fiscal accounting report at Advisory Board meetings.  The Treasurer reviews, approves and submits expense reimbursements and invoices to the St. Theresa Bookkeeper.  He or she reconciles B&B financial records with bank records and church records, and oversees the Sacramento Diocesan Parochial Fund, Inc. account.  The Treasurer will assist the Director with accounting and policy procedures.
  • Volunteer Chairperson – The Volunteer Chairperson is responsible for coordination of all B&B volunteers.  He or she processes volunteer applications, assigns volunteer positions in conjunction with program chairs and lead coordinators, and maintains accurate volunteer records.   The Volunteer Chairperson provides volunteers with B&B Volunteer Handbook/Orientation Manual and ensures new volunteers have signed and turned in the Handbook acknowledgement form within two weeks of initial volunteer assignment.
  • Deep Cleaning Chairperson – The Deep Cleaning Chairperson is responsible for the quarterly cleaning of Grace Hall kitchen.   He or she coordinates and supervises B&B cleaning crews and community service groups and procures cleaning supplies as needed.

Lead Volunteer Coordinator Positions:

  • Monday Meal Volunteer Crew Coordinator Assistants – Serves as Assistant for one Monday Meal per month providing direction to volunteer teams regarding setup, serving, and cleanup.  Commitment is for one Monday per month from approximately 2:30-6:45pm at Grace Hall located at 1041 Lyons Avenue,South Lake Tahoe, CA.
  • Kids’ Backpack Program – Summer Lead Volunteer – Oversees and serves as lead for the summer food distribution program held at Grace Hall on Wednesdays.  Commitment is for a couple of Wednesdays over the summer (mid-June to September) from approximately 8:30am to 1:30pm at Grace Hall located at 1041 Lyons Avenue, South Lake Tahoe, CA.
  • Kids’ Backpack Program – School-year Lead Volunteer – Oversees and serves as lead for the school-year distribution program guiding volunteers in packing and distribution of bags to local schools.  Commitment is for one Thursday per month during the school year (September to mid-June) from approximately 1:30-3:30pm at Grace Hall located at 1041 Lyons Avenue, South Lake Tahoe, CA.

Monday Meal Cooking Team:

  • Lead Cook Assistant – Assist the lead cook in preparing Monday Meal.  Commitment is for one Monday per month from approximately 11:00am to 5pm at Grace Hall located at 1041 Lyons Avenue,South Lake Tahoe, CA.
  • Substitute Lead Cook – As needed, lead the cooking team in preparing Monday Meal.  Commitment varies based on need and is from approximately 11:00am to 5pm on various Mondays throughout the year at Grace Hall located at 1041 Lyons Avenue, South Lake Tahoe, CA.

Setup/Serving Crew Weekly Teams:

  • Monday Meal – Assist Crew Coordinator with setup/serving of Monday Meal and distribution of groceries as needed.  Commitment is from 3-6pm one Monday per month at Grace Hall located at 1041 Lyons Avenue, South Lake Tahoe, CA.
  • Second Serving – Assist Crew Coordinator with setup/serving/cleanup of Second Serving as needed.  Commitment is from 3:30-6pm one Friday per month at the Lake Tahoe Community Presbyterian Church located at 2733 Lake Tahoe Blvd, South Lake Tahoe, CA.

Clean-up Crew:

  • Monday Meal – Assist Crew Coordinator with cleanup of kitchen and dining room after Monday Meal is complete.  Commitment is from approximately 5:15-6:45pm one Monday per month at Grace Hall located at 1041 Lyons Avenue, South Lake Tahoe, CA.
  • Deep Cleaning – Assist the Deep Cleaning Chairperson with quarterly cleaning of the Grace Hall kitchen.  Cleaning typically occurs on a weekday from 10am-2pm, four times per year, at Grace Hall located at 1041 Lyons Avenue, South Lake Tahoe, CA.
